Warhammer 40K Club – Black Legion v Dark Eldar battle report

Yesterday saw my second battle of our min-tournament, with my Black Legion Chaos Space Marines facing off against Austin’s Dark Eldar.  Having conceded my first round against Necrons (I was struck down a minion of Nurgle and chained to the big white throne for penance), and lost my second round to the horrid forces of the false emperors Dark Angel marines, I was eager to finally make a good showing for the Gods of Chaos.

This would be the last round before we were allowed to “tweak” our army lists so I still had the same force that faced Gary’s Dark Angels.

Rolling for my Warlords Trait, Lord Morrow becomes a Lord of Terror and gains the Fear special rule, while Sorceror Hunsa rolled for his psychic powers getting Heamorage (Biomancy), Doombolt and Breath of Chaos (Tzeentch). Austin’s Dark Eldar had the first turn as I failed to seize the initiative, and the carnage began!

At the end of turn 6 despite their best efforts the Dark Eldar have only killed 1 Havoc leaving the remaining 9 members to high five at the success of their flakk missiles.

Piney the Defiler still stands tall at the close of battle, having fended off multiple dark lances. Having finally been immobilised and lost its flamers, a quick trip the warpsmiths will have it back in fighting form.

Lord Morrow and Sorceror Hunsa revel in their bloody glory having survived their assaults and the battle as a whole.

As the meagre remains of SAMCRO retire from the battlefield the remaining (though heaviliy bombarded) Dark Eldar claim the objective.

Although I lost the mission objective overall I was very pleased to have gained my first tournament VP’s as well as first blood for the downed Raider. My dice were definitely at the whim of Tzeentch as my luck fluctuated between abysmal (armour saves) and downright blessed (the Defiler’s battle cannon only deviating once with the scatter dice – much to Austin’s chagrin). It was my first time facing a flyer under the new rules and my (expensive) flakk missiles proved their worth. Austin’s darklance’s failed to destroy my defiler (though for want of trying) even if It did take me till turn 4 to realise that as a Deamon it has a 5+ invulnerable save too. When the battle finally ended on my turn 6 the deamon engine still stood (albeit very still, having been immobilised) with a single hull point remaining.

Facing Austin’s excellently painted force has made me want to get more of mine finally finished, though it will be a slow process with my multitude of other hobbies and activities vying for time.

Looking ahead to rounds 4 and 5 I’m due to face the greenskin Orc horde and a Tau cadre, and a couple of weeks to make any alterations to my list that I think could improve my chances. Several friends have said I need to include a Helldrake (Burn Turkey) but I honestly dont like them and the cost of the actual model is frankly ridiculous (being a severely limited budget gamer). I am tempted to use the Forgeworld rules for the Land-Raider Spartan (which both Imperial and Chaos can use) as I have my scratchbuilt Raider which would suit this nicely (being 13 inches long!) but its a huge chunk of points to invest in a single target model, maybe… we’ll see what dreams of conquest and glory the fickle Chaos gods send me through the warp.
