All Scars Vordrast Incursion – Stage 5

BLToday at Tabletop Tyrants we had the 5th round of the All Scars Vordrast Incursion campaign, I would be facing Tau again but under another new warlord, Steven.

With both my Lord and main Sorcerer recovering with the chirurgeon the task of leadership fell to Otto the Warpsmith and he wanted to bring all his favourite children out to play.

Steven won the roll for picking zones and chose to deploy first, with not only a Riptide but also a R’Varna beside it! Oh boy. I tried to seize the initiative but even with my Legacy of Ruin giving me a re-roll I failed.

The first few rounds went quite well with me only losing a couple of men, the dreadnought and a couple of hull points off the Proteus, but Steven lost several infantry and even had 2 units be forced to go to ground after trying to target the Proteus (thank you Ark of Unnameable Horror).

All of my reserves came on in turn 2, with Otto using his Trait granted Outflank to lead his unit into the side of the Tau deployment and getting stuck in to an assault.

The tau taking out my heldrake on round 3 was a turning point, I was going to miss it burning up his infantry, but the remaining vehicles continued to spread the soulblaze goodness around – managing to finish off the crisis suit team and it proved the downfall of the Riptide in round 4 following Steven rolling an amazing stream of 1’s that would have been normally mine. Despite being able to make it in to combat with the tau warlord the sneaky mech used hit and run to leave my warpsmith standing, ready to be bombarded next round.

Time was eluding us so we agreed to call it after the end of turn 5, and what a turn it was. A hail of tau fire focused on the warpsmith and his remaining 4 marine guards and each in turn was pulled into the line of fire by the mechatendrils to take the brunt of the first volley, the last few shots bouncing harmlessly off his metallic body. Then the big boys got stuck in, missiles galore rained upon him but again his plated frame shrugged them away, that is until the twin linked rail guns of the broadsides started. They had been quiet for most of the game but they certainly made their presence felt now, hammering AP1 shots into the chaos mechanic and leaving splattered lumps of flesh and metal in his place.

Knowing it was to be the final turn of the game my Raptor dropped into hover mode and opened up on the tau warlord with the avenger bolt cannon and missiles but the sneaky tau still stood, albeit on a single wound. The rest of my units managed to kill a few more infantry but not enough, even the lucky soulblaze failed me as both the warlord and large firewarrior unit managed to stop drop and roll, putting out the fires.

Final score 12-7 to the tau, I had terrible luck with drawing the objective cards while Steven had a little better (plus his racial bonus card for the campaign was of great benefit – Overwhelming Firepower – perfect for the tau). A great game though, I still had an untouched Rhino, 5 marines, the Raptor and the Spartan (on 4 HPs) so didn’t lose too much. Steven was a great opponent, one which I look forward to facing again in the future.

The forces of Darkness won the day overall 4-2 (though some games were only decided by single points – close!) and in the Great Game battle between Khorne, Tzeentch , Nurgle and Grey Knights, the forces of the Blood God secured the Spear of Russ.

The final round will be in 2 weeks, using the Deadlock maelstrom mission. I don’t know who my opponent will be yet but it’s got to be an all or nothing to gain one last victory on Vordrast before we leave the planet behind us.
