Scenery as usual was already set up before play and we alternated placing the objectives. We both agreed on no night fighting and I won the roll off, deciding to deploy second. Jay had 2 scout, 2 bike and a termie unit in reserve (most with the outflank ability) and set the rest of his forces up.

I deployed everything except my flyers, even choosing to start my warptalons on the board behind a building in my deployment zone. I failed to seize the initiative and Jays units made their initial scout moves, advancing towards me.

With Jay’s campaign objective card being “No Prisoners” he quite rightly focused on one unit of my Thousand Sons, though only managed to reduce them to 3 men in the first round (he soon made up for it thereafter though).

The game as a whole was close throughout but as Jay continued to focus on destroying whole units and capturing the objectives on the cards he drew while I totally forgot to discard ones that I had little chance of achieving and began to lag behind on points.  Casualties wise we both got off reasonably lightly overall.

Most memorable moments of the game for me though were my Lord ripping the ironclad dreadnought apart when it had the gall to charge him (care of the Hand of Darkness), only to later slaughter a marine sergeant and be “rewarded” by being turned into a spawn! (I guess Jaxxon gets that promotion now, unless the cabal of sorcerer’s aboard the Ruinous Bounty know a ritual to restore their leader to his former self. Closely followed by Sorceror Hathor on his bike taking the remaining assault terminators down thanks to his psyched up assault (got to love Iron Arm and a powered up Force Staff).

With time running out on us we both agreed that we would call it at the end of turn 5, which meant I had the opportunity to drop all three of my flyers into hover mode on my last turn but thanks to their storm shield saves even the massed firepower of a heldrake and a fire raptor I just couldn’t finish off Jay’s leader and bike mounted command squad.

Final score was 16-11 to Jay – a well deserved victory, but overall the forces of Darkness held on to Vordrast. They even managed to infiltrate the command bunker and prevent Steiner pressing the Exterminatus button.

Next up for my Legion will be the Grudge Match event in February, in which I shall be having a rematch with Jay. We have agreed to a 2000 point Cleanse & Control game so should be interesting.
