The Black Crusade begins

traitorshate_prodslideSo several of my fellow All Scars and myself have gotten a little excited with all this talk of the Black Crusade, however we are also old enough to remember that this isn’t the 13th Crusade, as that was fought several years ago in a worldwide campaign organised by GW (BTW Chaos won and Eldrad is dead!).

With this being retconned because no-one wanted to admit the bad guys won, we are calling the current one the 14th Crusade and have decided to play a slow burn campaign amongst ourselves (while still playing our Damnation Campaign and other games too) starting with the dark forces assault as outlined in the Traitors Hate book.

Last weekend I played my first game. I would be facing my nemesis of old, Gary, with his beautifully painted Dark Angels army. We agreed on 3000 points, no super heavies, and to play the Eternal War: Purge the Alien mission.

My CSM units, spawn and helbrute deployed in one corner, and all but one unit of raptors were able to deep strike on round 1. I was hoping to make some early headway against some of his tactical squads but the dice gods were favouring Gary and he passed almost all of his armour saves.

His veterans in drop pods came in close behind my terminators and their withering melta and plasma volleys took a massive toll. My cabal sorcerers proved to be ridiculously useless, and the few powers they did cast were denied with ease.

The game went for a full 4 rounds before we called it, all I had left were four of my spawns and the score was 12-8 to the Dark Angels. It had been a hard-fought game but the stalwart defenders of humanity had stood firm. A lot of fun had as always and lessons learned.

It was nice to play a non maelstrom mission for a change, and have a specific goal in mind (even if that goal is just to kill as much as possible), and it was fun to use the new Black Legion Speartip formation again, though perhaps I should use less expensive units as Gary’s use of multiple cheap tactical squads remains a solid tactic.
