All Scars Glory Hogs – on the Path to Glory

Posted in 40k with tags , , , , , , , on April 18, 2017 by vobeskhan

A while back GW released something called Path to Glory – A Call to Chaos. You may have seen the guys over at Miniwargaming playing this a few times on their videos (you haven’t? go check it out, they’re good fun). Well, fellow All Scar and Chaos enthusiast Mark got a copy and we’ve been planning on having a go ourselves ever since but just haven’t had a chance to fit it in to our gaming schedules.

However, neither of us were planning on entering the annual All Scars 40k Tournament this year so thought this would be our perfect opportunity to give it a whirl, a few others were interested and this then snowballed until we now have 16 prospective Chaos Warbands competing (where was all this love for Chaos previously hmmm).

I guess the good thing is that we are all working from the same codex so the playing field is more even than say facing Eldar/Tau/Spesh Maureens, so that may have been holding their chaotic tendencies back.

The format is based upon your Lord summoning a warband to battle in an effort to become the Champion of his patron power, being elevated to the rank of Deamon Prince and being the best there is. While it would have been great to have the warbands spread evenly across the 4 patron powers it didn’t work out that way.

Tzeentch taking quite a few people’s fancy. So we are tweaking the rules a little and taking a leaf out of the Highlander movie as “there can be only one!”, so not only must you  defeat the rest of the pretenders to the favour of your patron but the final champion of each god will face off (without the rest of their warbands) in true gladiator style in a fatal-4-way match.

Some of the players are using their existing forces (Jon’s Night Lords and Beastman Deamonkin, Mark’s World Eaters, Patrick E’s Word Bearers, to name a few) while others have dove in fully and bought new models solely for the purpose (Samuel). I’m using my existing collection, the reason I chose Tzeentch being because I already have 20+ Thousand Son models plus a broad selection of the rest of the models required.

So my burgeoning warband was rolled up (all of us made sure at least 1 other player witnessed the rolls for fairness) and this is what I shall be beginning my path to glory with:

+++ the Rising Sons (Warhammer 40,000 Path to Glory) +++

We shall also be utilising the Deamon planet and thematic missions GW released to go with the mini-campaign, so stay tuned for updates on how it all unfolds.

All Scars painting challenge – The Survivor Series 2017 – April

Posted in 40k with tags , , , , , , on April 16, 2017 by vobeskhan

April, the time of Spring, so obviously the time of horrid wet weather – though thankfully its not been too bad so far and the few days we’ve had of glorious sunshine have even ecouraged me to get this months pledge done (I hate painting under artificial light).

So this months pledge was just a single model but one I really quite like – from the Dark Vengeance boxed set chosen squad, officially known as Draznicht of the Crimson Slaughter. I use him as a Dark Apostle in my Black Legion as I really like his pose and the power maul and am not a massive fan of the “official” model.

As always I started with a black primer, but as with a few of my recent models decided to take a leaf out of GW Duncan’s book (after re-watching how he did his Black Legion power armour) and drybrushed Leadbelcher over all but the cape. The cape got several thin coats of Calador Sky, with a Ceramite White on the trim before finally getting Bad Moon Yellow over that. Details on the backpack were picked out in Screaming Bell, the face and helmet horns had a basecoat of Rakarth Flesh, and then I picked the armour out with Abaddon Black. The head of the power maul I saw as more a badge of office than just a weapon so gave it a coat of Retributor Armour, as well as using it to pick out a couple of details on the body.

The base was simply Astrogranite as per my standard trooper bases.

The head and horns were given an Agrax Earthshade wash, then the head had a light drybrush of Cadian Fleshtone over that. The rest of the model had a Nuln Oil wash, the base rim tidied with Abaddon Black and job done.

Some of us are about to start a Path to Glory “Call of Chaos” mini-campaign (16 players – where were all of these Chaos players previously?)  so next month I might need to paint a unit up for use in my warband for that.

All Scars painting challenge – The Survivor Series 2017 – March

Posted in 40k with tags , , , , , , on March 17, 2017 by vobeskhan

So this month for the Survivor Series, rather than go with something I would be needing for the annual All Scars Tournament I went with something just because I liked the models – that and the fact that I’m not taking part in the tournament this year (won’t go into it here, maybe in a later post).

So I had recently acquired some Cataphractii terminators from fellow club members Jon and Alastair and had built them up as members of my Black Legion force (hey these guys have been around since the Heresy and deserve the armour more than the loyalist Spesh Maureen’s do).

Having built enough for two squads, and used them in a couple of my Damnation battles I wanted to get a unit painted.

I kept the scheme pretty much to my normal – Black with silver trim, with one silver pad – but wanted to paint the cloth strips and one pad to represent their mark allegience. In this instance blue for Tzeentch. I had every intention of putting the ourobos decal on the blue pad and my custom made (thank you so much Mark) warband decal on the silver as normal, unfortunately both were just that little too wide to fit without looking odd.

I also did the bases in a style to match my bikes, mainly because their that much bigger than the normal 25mm infantry ones and looked a bit bare.

One note, I was over halfway through when I realised that I had done 6 men instead of 5. I will most likely repaint one with green accents for the Nurgle squad when I paint them up (maybe next month, haven’t decided yet).

Jon has also given me a box of sprues full of spares from his other Calth sets, which I’m combining with various chaos spares for more heretical goodness.

So that’s another month done, and even finished early. I really enjoyed painting the Cataphractii, just wish Chaos got the proper rules for them same as Loyalists do.

All Scars painting challenge – The Survivor Series 2017 – January & February

Posted in 40k on March 2, 2017 by vobeskhan

survivor seriesSo I’m a little late with the first part of this, having been kept busy with other things.

2017 is here and that means a new year of the Survivor Series, we’re changing it around slightly by pulling the Showcases forward a month so that the final one of the year doesn’t fall at Christmas. We’re also stipulating that in the Showcase it must include a base if the model comes with one.

So January’s pledge for me, I decided to do a squad of my Possessed Marines, I think I’ve only fielded them once or twice ever, not a massive fan of how they play and by the end of the month even less of a fan of the models.

Perhaps its the curse of painting models that were already built by a previous owner, but I found that these were awkward to get at some of the details and generally didn’t like the lack of distinction on the models between armour and demonic influence (probably another reason I don’t use demons either).

As my Demon Prince is Tzeentch I decided I wanted to keep these guys in a similar vein, so blue tints for the demonic parts.

I can honestly say it came close to changing the pledge at the last-minute and even closer to not finishing them at all, but they were done to a tabletop standard and I still think it will be a dark day before they see battle.

And so on to February and our first Showcase of the year, I decided to take one of my favourite models that had sat in a black primered state for much too long – my first Defiler, Azog!

Having spent a fair few hours playing Dawn of War over Christmas I had also been making the Black Legion on there use my silver trim colour scheme and wanted to replicate much of that with my model.

I had also watched a recent YouTube video by GW’s Duncan on painting Black Legion power armour and thought I’d adapt a simpler version of this to my needs.

First came a pretty much all over leadbelcher drybrush, after which I kind of lost impetus and the model sat doing nothing for half the month.

Eventually I picked the brush back up and used Abaddon Black to go back and re-paint the flatter areas of the armour plates etc, and then picked out the details I wanted in Retributor Gold, just to make some of the metallics stand out from the mass of silver.

An all over Nuln Oil wash was applied and a few days later I used the blue gem paint (can’t remember the name, sorry) to pick out the power lines (this took about three coats applied over a few days). I also wanted to do something to show the power on the power scourge, so decided to start with a light drybrush of Caldor Blue, followed by a fine edge highlight on the mace flanges of Elf Grey (one of the paints that has survived from my very first paint sets so actually older than my daughters!

I’m quite happy with the final result and genuinely look forward to fielding him in battle – even if the rules ignore the fact that he can reach the upper floors of a building even if his feet aren’t on it (but can still be seen by enemies if the cover doesn’t cover his height – double standards much!).

The Black Crusade begins

Posted in 40k with tags , , , , , , on January 12, 2017 by vobeskhan

traitorshate_prodslideSo several of my fellow All Scars and myself have gotten a little excited with all this talk of the Black Crusade, however we are also old enough to remember that this isn’t the 13th Crusade, as that was fought several years ago in a worldwide campaign organised by GW (BTW Chaos won and Eldrad is dead!).

With this being retconned because no-one wanted to admit the bad guys won, we are calling the current one the 14th Crusade and have decided to play a slow burn campaign amongst ourselves (while still playing our Damnation Campaign and other games too) starting with the dark forces assault as outlined in the Traitors Hate book.

My CSM units, spawn and helbrute deployed in one corner, and all but one unit of raptors were able to deep strike on round 1. I was hoping to make some early headway against some of his tactical squads but the dice gods were favouring Gary and he passed almost all of his armour saves.

His veterans in drop pods came in close behind my terminators and their withering melta and plasma volleys took a massive toll. My cabal sorcerers proved to be ridiculously useless, and the few powers they did cast were denied with ease.

The game went for a full 4 rounds before we called it, all I had left were four of my spawns and the score was 12-8 to the Dark Angels. It had been a hard-fought game but the stalwart defenders of humanity had stood firm. A lot of fun had as always and lessons learned.

It was nice to play a non maelstrom mission for a change, and have a specific goal in mind (even if that goal is just to kill as much as possible), and it was fun to use the new Black Legion Speartip formation again, though perhaps I should use less expensive units as Gary’s use of multiple cheap tactical squads remains a solid tactic.

SAMCRO Black Legion year in review

Posted in 40k with tags , , , , , , , on December 31, 2016 by vobeskhan

SAMCRO-legionAs 2016 draws to a close it’s time for the annual reflection on how my SAMCRO warband have grown and the progress they have made.

Games wise its been a slower year, only managing 20 actual games, with 7 victories, 1 draw and 12 losses. If I had to pick one that stands out it would be the opening battle of the Damnation Campaign against the Tau – they were totally unprepared for the speartip assault we unleashed against them.

Painting wise, the Survivor Series Painting Challenge was another success this year, I managed to complete all 12 of my pledges, resulting in fielding a fully painted tournament force for the majority of our annual tournament (didn’t make the results any better, finishing dead last), as well as finally completing some of my long-planned conversions and getting them painted up.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Not a bad result for the year, bringing the tally of models for the legion as follows (I have included the cultists and their associated Guard vehicles which will eventually become an allied force of Renegade Guard, which aren’t included in last years figures in brackets):

  • Assembly Needed – 1 (5)
  • Unpainted – 174 (125)
  • Need Stripping – 3 (5)
  • Base sprayed – 145 (96)
  • Painted – 119 (74)
  • Total models – 442 (305)

The Black Legion itself has had a few improvements this year too, with a new soft cover supplement book containing new formations and tactical objectives, the Tratitors Hate book with more formations, vehicle squadron rules and alternative detachment and objectives, and then the biggest release, the Traitor Legions softback, which pretty much combined the other two into a handy single volume but now with added bonus rules including the Speartip Detachment (which I put to good use in my final game of the year against the Blood Angels).

With the Gathering Storm:Fall of Cadia coming in January 2017, you can be sure there will be a Chaos counterpart hot on its heels – hopefully 2017 will see Chaos back in its rightful place as the galaxy’s biggest threat instead of its laughing boys, though to do so we still need to get that long overdue updated codex – the new formations, detachments and Legion updates are a step in the right direction but the underlying issues of the outdated codex remain.

What are my plans for SAMCRO in 2017? Well, I want to continue getting the outstanding units painted up, I’m also planning on upgrading some of my old school (ie small metal) terminators using some of the Betrayal at Calth Cataphractii plastics. Wether that results in better gaming results remains to be seen, but if Abaddon’s boys could wait ten millenia I too can have patience.
