All Scars painting challenge – The Survivor Series 2017 – November

Posted in Gaming events with tags , , , on November 5, 2017 by vobeskhan

So this month I decided to have a break from 40k models and finally get around to painting some of the figures or my Last Night on Earth board game (from Flying Frog Productions).

I was inspired by many of the monochrome zombies I’ve seen painted for the TWD All Out War game but wanted to keep the rotting zombie colour – thankfully I found my ancient pots of Citadel colours of Rotting Flesh and Ghoul Grey.

These were successively drybrushed over an Eshin Grey base which in turn was over a black primer. Everything then got an Agrax wash and the bases were Waagh Flesh with coloured rims to designate the separate “pools” of zombies.

This might even encourage me to paint the individual heroes from the game too, though those will take some extra effort.

All Scars painting challenge – The Survivor Series 2017 – October

So this month I wasn’t really feeling the urge to paint (possibly due to some proposed changes to the series which have sadly been made official since) so just pledged a CSM unit, possibly a Havoc squad.

Settled on a Havoc squad built from my modified Calth heavy weapons men and their accompanying champion.

Not sure if there will be further pledges as the whole format of the series is being altered (with only 2 months of the current year to go for no reason other than the new supervisor within the All Scars wanted to).

New format is pledge any single model rather than a fieldable unit, so single marine/grot/familiar etc.

Showcases will be every other month.

Voluntary “donation” of £5 towards the extra showcase prizes which will also gain you entry to a raffle.

oh well, guess the idea is no longer to encourage us to field painted forces but just have odd miniatures here and there.

All Scars painting challenge – The Survivor Series 2017 – September

This month I knew I wouldn’t have a lot of time (or inclination) to paint so wanted to do something small – having looked in a few of my old boxes I cme across an old rhino back from my Space Wolves days and since that force is never going to see the light of day again I decided to repurpose it for my SAMCRO Black Legion.

It’s not going to win any awards but it matched the rest of my army and thats good enough for me.

Now I just need to decide what to do for Octobers pledge……

All Scars painting challenge – The Survivor Series 2017 – August

So the Survivor Series reaches yet another Showcase month and following the release of 8th edition and its accompanying FW Chaos Index I decided to paint my Helforged Contemptor (modified from a Betrayal at Calth model).

I’ve only used him in a couple of games (mostly in 7th, 1 in 8th) and he usually gets blown to hell.

Originally he was magnetised so he could be removed from his base but once I finished the painting I decided to glue him in place. The pieces on his base are Blood Angel parts donated by fellow All Scar Ricky, and are in “honour” of my annual Christmas throw down with Blood Angel player Patrick.

Hope you like him, I’m quite happy with him, particularly the gloss Nuln Oil wash (first time using that version) making the black armour plates pop a little better.

All Scars painting challenge – The Survivor Series 2017 – July

So this month’s pledge was one of my older miniatures that has sat languishing on the shelf for many a year – Fabius Bile.

It was primered in white but needed a little cleaning up after its long wait. Despite a quick start of the month getting much of the base colours done I then found that I had no mojo to complete the model until this morning.

I wanted his flesh coat to be made up of varying shades to signify the pieces coming from differing sources so used a combination of rakarth flesh, cadian fleshtone, and pallid wychflesh before a wash of reikland flesh.

I’m still not a fan of painting faces (theres a reason we have helmets on the models) but I’m happy with how he’s ended up.

Now just interested to see how he fares in a game, especially after the news that the actual 8th edition codex is only a couple of weeks away!

All Scars painting challenge – The Survivor Series 2017 – June

So this month I knew I was going to be busy with various projects so didn’t want to over-pledge. In this case I decided to show a little love to one of my “old school” predators which have sat languishing in their primered black state since I got them.

Now, I didn’t build them, they were acquired pre-built and primed, so I really haven’t done anything to them for over 5 years. They not only use the old style rhino chassis but also the predator add-on parts are the old metal type making the model quite weighty too.

Using the same colour scheme as on my vindicator and rhino the predator fits in with the rest of the army, though having used an all-over nuln oil wash I’m considering applying the same to the other vehicles now too.

Anyway, here’s the predator.

All Scars painting challenge – The Survivor Series 2017 – May

Well May is our second Showcase month of the year so I wanted to do a character model for my SAMCRO Black Legion.

I recently built a Sorcerer with jump pack to accompany my Raptor Talon in a game (though technically it’s possessed winged backpack rather than a jump pack). Using a combination of Raptor and Calth marine parts, along with a Chaos Knight lance for the force staff he quickly came together and performed quite well in his game against the dreaded Dark Angels.

In honour of this performance I decided to decorate his base with the helmet of one of his fallen foes (or should that be Fallen allies?) along with a piece of terrain to go with the ruined piece he appears to be leaping off from.

I made a quick start, getting the model primed in black as usual, then getting the astrogranite and base ready. Then unfortunately I seemed to lose impetus and left the model lounging on the table for most of the month.

Until today that is, I felt the desire to paint and set myself up to do so while watching the Monaco Grand Prix. I expected to get a good way through the painting but surprised myself by getting it totally finished (a decal will be applied once its all dry and I get the opportunity).

The photos are terrible as I used my phone camera (hopefully will get some better ones done using my daughters camera when she gets back off holiday).

So here he is, my Talon Sorcerer of Tzeentch with combi-melta and force staff.
